Catherine M. James
Watercolor
Catherine’s watercolor paintings feature bright colors set off by rich dramatic darks. Using exquisite detail, she pulls the viewer into the painting for a closer look. The artist’s work is influenced by Japanese prints and Asian design. Catherine’s vibrant paintings immerse the viewer in the stillness and beauty of worlds within trees and plants.
After growing up in the Midwest, Catherine James moved to the Seattle area and fell in love with the mossy green forests and misty mountains of the Pacific Northwest. The artist earned a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and then worked in the Seattle area for many years as a graphic designer, art director, and children’s software illustrator. Catherine lives in Redmond. She uses her own beautiful Japanese garden as a resource for many of her paintings, as well as many gardens she has visited throughout the Northwest and England. Hiking throughout the Northwest has also provided unlimited inspiration for her paintings. “I paint in an attempt to stop time. I want to hold onto the fleeting moments of connection with the natural world and the unforgettable events of great beauty in our lives.” – Catherine M. James |
